On Thursday, April 21st, the second Prized Writing Student Author Event of the academic year will be held in 126 Voorhies from 4:10-6 pm. The theme of this quarter’s reading is Sensory Innovation.

Through their prize winning pieces, essayists Rachel Aquino and Mikaela Watson delve into the symbiotic relationship between the senses and creativity. In “Let Them Eat This: Applewood Bacon Cupcakes, Noah’s Ark, and Tasty Cake Creations,” Rachel Aquino reveals how taste compelled a family to turn their passion for baking into a lucrative business. Mikaela Watson describes how, in the early days of cinema, filmmakers employed trickery to create visual effects in “Méliès and McLaren: Motion Moving the Story.” Their essays can be found in the 2009-2010 edition of Prized Writing, which is available for purchase at the UC Davis Bookstore.

UC Davis’ Writing Program invites the public and members of the press to join these authors as they share and discuss their work. Copies of Prized Writing will be available for purchase, and cupcakes from Let Them Eat Cake will be the featured refreshment.
